December 2003. Keene, NH.
Common Redpoll Carduelis flammea flammea. Adult male.
Two or three individual male Common Redpolls were noticeably pale with only lightly marked undertail coverts. These birds initially suggested Hoary Redpoll, however the obvious red color to the upper breast at this time of year would rule out that species. With wear, the pinky-red upper breast should become more intense, whereas Hoary Redpoll should only show a faint pink wash across the upper breast in December. All of the images were taken in Keene in December 2003.
Images taken using Nikon Coolpix 995 through Swarovski HD telescope.

Common Redpoll. Adult male. Note the intensity of the breast color, well streaked flanks
and brownish cast to the upperparts, all suggesting Common Redpoll.
