December 2003. Keene, NH.
| Hoary (Arctic) Redpoll Carduelis hornemmanni exilipes.
| | Images taken using Nikon Coolpix 995 through Swarovski HD telescope. |

Adult male Hoary Redpoll. Very
pale below with minimal flank streaking but with a subtle faint pink
wash
high on the breast indicating a male. The pink wash could be expected
to become more intense
towards the spring as the breast feathers wear.

| This bird had unusually dusky gray cheeks, seen on the Keene bike path on December 28th, 2003, |

A darker individual but still showing the overall cold gray cast and a distinctive broad band of white across the rump.
| An even darker individual than that above but within the range of variation of Hoary Redpoll. Probably a first-winter. |
