December 2003. Keene, NH.
Hoary (Arctic) Redpoll Carduelis hornemmanni exilipes.
Images taken using Nikon Coolpix 995 through Swarovski HD telescope.

Adult male Hoary Redpoll. Very pale below with minimal flank streaking but with a subtle faint pink
wash high on the breast indicating a male. The pink wash could be expected to become more intense
towards the spring as the breast feathers wear.

This bird had unusually dusky gray cheeks, seen on the Keene bike path on December 28th, 2003,

A darker individual but still showing the overall cold gray cast and a distinctive broad band of white across the rump.

An even darker individual than that above but within the range of variation of Hoary Redpoll. Probably a first-winter.
