July 29th, 2005. West Quabbin, MA.
Tried the Western side of Quabbin again this morning. Overall, it was much warmer with more bugs around, and a distinct drop in bird activity after 10 am. I focused on Gate 12 which gave a very good variety of species (40+), especially within the first half-mile of the gate. Further downslope, the Hemlock woods looked good for Acadian Flycatcher though I didn’t come across any today.

Highlights from Gate 12 included: 9 Ruffed Grouse, Black-billed Cuckoo, 3 Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers, 2 Least Flycatchers, 4 Black-throated Blue Warblers, 2 Magnolia Warblers, 5 Winter Wrens, 3 Indigo Buntings and a male Purple Finch.
Taken using Canon Powershot A-95 through Leica 10x42 binoculars.
